General Rules
The game of disc golf is a precision and accuracy sport where the players must strategically throw a flying disc into a target or basket. Similar to ball golf, each player competes as an individual, rather than as a member of a multi-person team. The target of the game is to complete the course target. This occurs when the disc hits the chains and comes to a rest in the basket below. The winner is the player with the least number of attempts to complete the target. Stroke play scoring is when one point is tallied for each attempt that the player makes. This is the most common method. There are other variations of disc golf that use different ways to score each throw. However, the fundamental objectives are still the same.
Choosing a Disc
Just about anyone can pick up a disc and start learning how to play the game. The first thing that you must do is choose a disc. For beginners, they advise that you start off with a light-weight DX disc. There are three different types of discs that are used in the game, the first is known as a driver. This type is characterized by a smaller diameter, low profile and sharp edge. The driver is used in situations where the player’s goal is to cover the maximum distance possible. Next are the mid-range discs. These are typically known for their versatility and are best for mid-range shots that require accuracy and control. Finally, putters are the shortest and slowest disc and are ideal for short and controlled upshots as they glide very well.
